June 25, 2020 is fast approaching and will not be an ordinary day. It’s the « Seafarers Day ». This year, the day will be more than that. It is truly the day of the « Heroes of the Sea », crews who, despite the brutality of the Covid-19 pandemic, have not given up. Their sense of sacrifice, deeply anchored in the soul, is the blood that drives their determination to continue working by providing maritime services that have enabled nations to keep up with a dying global economy. Whatever the nationality of the seafarer, the cargo of the ship and her destination, the key word is: Not to break the supply chain. But all of this to the detriment of what, when you know that each seafarer had to think not only of himself, but also of his family who his thousands of miles away. The fear of losing a relative is more than terrifying in an environment of physical distance and emotional stress. The « Seafarers » at that time gave what they hold dear: their feelings. Feelings that they shared and still share, without counting, with everyone. A solemn tribute must then be paid to the sailors of the world, who in addition to the confinement on board and sanitary measures imposed at ports of call, must overcome another problem of another kind: the crew change. In fact, some 200,000 sailors are impatiently waiting to disembark from ships to return home. They don’t ask for anything, just to be repatriated. How to manage the change of 25% of the global workforce of sailors and who have been on board for 10 months or more? We hope that shipowners, authorities and professional federations will find an immediate solution to the replacement of suffering crews. Even staying on board without working and being available only for emergencies and security is no guarantee of a normal maritime expedition. June 25, 2020 is to be marked with a white stone! Roll on the return of the sailors to their homes!
